Len Gadica

Len Gadica, (that's ga-dee-tsa...like pizza!) is a musician from Melville, Saskatchewan, Canada.  Len makes his living in the music field in various ways: A "1 Man-band" playing for dances every weekend, a children's entertainer doing shows for kids in schools and at concerts, a music teacher with students in piano, organ, keyboard and accordion, a church organist, piano tuner and composer.

Len Gadica started taking accordion lessons at age 7 and the piano accordion has been his pimary instrument right up to today.  He has recorded 4 albums of "old time" music, featuring polkas, waltzes, schottisches etc.  All the tunes on his albums are original compositions, many of which he has composed for competition at the Kimberley International Old Time Accordion Championships, held every July in Kimberley, B.C.  KIOTAC, as it is called, has become a huge showcase for accordion music, and is a real incentive for players of all ages.  Len has entered the "Happy Hans" open category many times, the one category open to any age and also to amateur and professional alike.  Len has been very successful in the competitions, winning 3 times and placing in the top 3 a total of 8 times.

Len has tried something new recently, compiling 4 music books for accordion with tunes from his albums.  It has been a satisfying and rewarding venture to make the music available in print.

Len continues to be very popular as an entertainer at dances and other functions throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba.  He is heavily booked on weekends, usually a year or more in advance, and plays many types of music including old time, country, old rock and roll and much more.

He is a 1-man band, and does it by recording himself as background, then playing along with it live.  Sort of a karaoke with him doing all the parts!  Len's new album is titled "Lucky Man" which is just what Len Gadica considers himself to be.  Music has been his love all his life, and to bring happiness to people while making a livng at it truly has been wonderful.

Performing for young audiences has always been a great experience too.  Len's show for kids is positive, happy and upbeat, and involves the kids with singing, actions and some plain old nonsense!  The children enjoy Len's "Music from around the World", which features music from many ethnic backgrounds and songs in as many as 7 different languages.

They also get a sampling of 3 types of accordions.  Len brings along his piano accordion. a button accordion and a concertina, hoping maybe there will be some future accordion players in the audience!

In the last few years Len has also performed a lot for senior citizens, and has put together a few specific programs, which the seniors enjoy.  Several of his programs feature music and songs from many years ago, with some trivia and humor to go along with the music.  The seniors he has played for have been very appreciative of his shows.

Don Lipovac

Of Slovenian heritage, Don started his musical career at the age of four, playing Slovenian melodies on a button-box accordion bought by his grandfather. He began piano accordion lessons with Alfred Vacca, who trained him thoroughly in the classics.
In 1958, Don won the nation's top accordion honor - first place in the American Accordion Association National Championship contest.

Don went on to represent the United States at the world competition in Brussels, Belgium. He attended the Kansas City Conservatory of Music and has degrees in both music theory and music education. Don has appeared on the Lawrence Welk Television show and as soloist with the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also been the Director of the St. John Tamburitzans for more than 35 years.

He has the unique distinction of having been inducted into both the Tamburitza Association of American Hall of Fame, for outstanding contributions toward the preservation of Tamburitza music; and the Polka Hall of Fame, awarded at Ironworld, USA, in Chisholm, Minnesota.

Besides being able to play music of his own Slovenian and Croation background, Don Lipovac possesses a large repertoire of songs of all nationalities.

Viking Persuasion

Monday July 7th, Family Dance - Viking Persuasion is a group with deep reaching roots in Kimberley playing Western Canadian Old Time Music. With a wide repertoire based on Nordic style old time accordion music, the Viking Persuasion's musical vista includes: Western Swing, Latin American as well as Pop Selections.
The group consists of: EDWIN ERICKSON (accordion, bass, vocals) - a native Albertan, is well known as a co-founder and perennial supporter of KIOTAC. Edwin began playing semi-professionally at age 15, and has since toured in Canada, Sweden, Norway, U.S.A., Iceland and the Faeroe Islands, recorded both in Canada and Scandinavia, as well as having been featured on radio and television on both continents. He is an active composer and arranger, having written upwards of sixty original pieces, mostly within the accordion realm.

ALLAN VALBERG (accordion, bass, vocals) - received his early training on the accordion in Norway, but has since won the admiration of a large following, both within Kimberley circles, as well as through many other performances, primarily in Western Canada. Allan still probably holds the record of “the most decorated” accordionist to have competed at KIOTAC over the years. He has since gone on to adjudicate and lead workshops at the festival numerous times. Allan is also a clever composer and arranger, and a very talented all-round musician.

BARNEY VALBERG (rhythm guitar) is a Norwegian-Canadian, having immigrated to the Calgary area in the early 60's. Barney has held the group together rhythmically and harmonically since before its inception, and is referred to by some as the “Chord God”. Since his initial involvement with KIOTAC in 1977, he has been a strong supporter and valued cultural consultant. Barney enjoys many kinds of music, but is most at home playing rhythm for old time music and finger picking the classics of the likes of Merle Travis and Chet Atkins. He has coached many young musicians, and presently teaches guitar in Sundre, Alberta.

MIKE MUSSON (bass, violin, steel guitar, vocals) joined the group in 2004. He is, however, no stranger to old time music, having first been part of groups with the Erickson brothers and Kimberley co-founder, Bill Baerg, as early as the late 60's. Mike is a native of the USA and received his formal classical training there, on piano and violin. He has since gone on to make a considerable impact within the realm of popular music here in Western Canada, primarily in the country vein, via his work on steel guitar, fiddle and arranging. Mike is a very adept vocal arranger, and brings this valuable talent to the group.

CONNIE JENSEN (drums, misc.percussion, vocals) is the newest member of the group, replacing long-time drummer, Erick Erickson. Connie has been involved in the piano/organ and choir realms for many years, but did not take up the drums until 5 years ago. However, due to her extraordinary ability, desire, and work ethic, she was able to perform publicly within a year. Since then she has drummed for numerous dances and variety functions in Central Alberta. In the summer of 2003, she was percussionist with Killingberg's Orchestra from Norway on a three-week tour of Iceland, Faeroe Islands and Norway. Connie's vocal work adds a nice feminine touch to the group.

Zoltan Orosz

Zoltan Orosz has inherited the love of the accordion from his father, who noticed early the outstanding talent of his son. Zoltan was four years old when he got his first accordion with 8 basses. In 1977, when he was only 11 years old, he started his studies at a Bela Bartok music conservatory in Budapest. There, he mastered playing not only the accordion but the organ as well. After taking his final exams in 1984 he continued his studies at Franz Liszt College, Budapest. Zoltan was 13 years old, when he entered an international accordion competition in Klingenthal (Germany). Even then.the audience was astonished by the young player. Thanks to an amateur recording you can listen to his play from that time.
